About this Car: A highly authentic and desirable example of GM's wood-bodied station wagon, this enchanting pre-war Pontiac Woodie boasts partial originality and a life of care by devoted enthusiasts. Built in only the third year of Pontiac's handsome Woodie production, this Deluxe Six was sent as a chassis to the Hercules Body Company in Evansville, Indiana, one of two companies that were contracted by GM in 1939 to produce wood bodies for Pontiac station wagons. Hercules bodies are noted by enthusiasts for their handsome choice of materials, a beautifully contrasting scheme of dark mahogany paneling with light ash framing. Acquired by a Connecticut owner, this Pontiac was used for many years as an estate vehicle, primarily during the summer months. It is believed that the car was stored on blocks during winter, which explains the remarkably preserved state that the intricate woodwork currently displays. Owned by a Southern California collector in recent years, this Woodie received a high recommendation of quality when it was invited to be the featured poster car for the 2003 Wavecrest Woodie Meet in Encinitas, California. Attended by Woodie owners nationwide, the Wavecrest meet is generally recognized as one of the foremost exhibitions of quality wood- bodied station wagons, and this Pontiac's participation is a glowing indication of its outstanding merits. As a 1939 model, this Deluxe Six features period GM fog lights, bumper guards, mirrors, a Deluxe Safety steering wheel, a heater, a radio and a quaint original cabin fan that is mounted on the dashboard. With a more recent repaint in the original color and replacement of the seat covers, this Pontiac has been attentively cared for so as to preserve as much originality as possible. Though Pontiac did not maintain exact body production numbers in 1939, this station wagon is likely one of no more than a couple thousand examples originally produced, and one of far fewer that remain in such well-preserved condition. The car is one of only seven 1939 examples of the Pontiac Woodie that are registered with the National Woodie Club. Accompanied by a documented history of ownership and accessories including tools, a jack, an owner's manual, and the 2003 Wavecrest poster, this superbly maintained Pontiac Deluxe Six Station Wagon is reported by the consignor to operate in as-new condition. Its eye-catching preservation and beautifully crafted wood components are a great tribute to the Pontiac-Hercules collaboration.
