For the final year of first-generation Shelby production, Ford simply updated leftover 1969 models with black hood stripes, a front spoiler and a revised serial number to create the 1970 Shelby. Only 788 were converted, and of those, just 90 were GT500 convertibles like this nicely restored Candy apple red example with contrasting gold stripes. By the late 1960s, the Shelby Mustang had evolved into a true “road car” with comfort to accompany the performance. Powered by the 335 HP 428 Cobra Jet, this GT500 offers brutal acceleration combined with luxury-like cruising manners thanks to its C6 automatic transmission, Deluxe interior, Competition Suspension, power steering and power front disc brakes. For 1969-70, Shelby final assembly was handled by the A.O. Smith Company, where extensive use of fiberglass gave the Shelby a much different look from previous models. Notably, the front end featured a full-width grille and a hood with five NACA ducts. Also, part of the package were side scoops, midlevel reflective stripes, sequential taillights, 5-spoke aluminum wheels, a roll bar and a center-mount exhaust port. According to its Marti Report, this 1970 GT500 convertible is one of only nine produced in Candy apple Red.
